Fruits of the Harvest Stockings

"Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples."  John 15:8

Sleek and yummy, bananas are simply scrumptious!

Bananas are native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia.  Today, bananas are grown in over 107 tropical countries!

Cultivated primarily for their fruit, bananas are utilised to produce fibre and ornamental plants.

Tall and quite sturdy, banana plants are often mistaken for trees.  The main stem is actually a pseudostem and may reach 2 to 8 meters in height.  Leaves may exceed 3.5 meters in length.

Bananas grow in clusters of up to 20 fruit per cluster.  Clusters grow in layers.  The total number of hanging clusters is called a bunch.

One banana plant may produce 3 to 20 clusters per bunch.

The skin and inner parts of the banana can be eaten raw or cooked.  Western cultures customarily eat the inside raw and discard the skin.

Asian cultures cook the inner part and skin and consume both.

Bananas have numerous strings or phloem bundles that lie between the skin and inner part.  Although edible, most people remove and discard them.

Bananas have divine health benefits.  They are rich in vitamin A, B6, C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc.  Additional blessings are 2 grammes of protein and 4 mg of fibre!

Need potassium?  A single banana has a colossal 602 mg of potassium!

Bananas are ideal for boosting potassium.  They are considered the perfect food for malnourished children.

With only 2 mg of sodium and 36 grammes of carbohydrates, bananas can be enjoyed by many with dietary restrictions.
